Q:Why is Marvel so afraid to make political statements unless they're hip?For instance, look at Cap: his main love interests forever were two blond, military WASPs. That's understandable in the old days, but now, why, when it would mean so much more for readers and the world to see the man who is supposed to be the living embodiment of everything that is good about the USA romantically involved with an African, Romani or Arab woman, for example? Why hasn't he ever been truly paired up with any WOC?
I don’t think it’s from a fear of making political statements that aren’t hip (and pairing Cap with a WOC wouldn’t be hip?) More simply, it’s that nobody who was working on the series ever pitched that as an idea they were interested in. There’s not much more to it than that.
I’d say that this never crossing the writers’ minds is the first indication of a problem.
